The purpose of this discussion forum is for you to demonstrate that you identify and analyze formal elements in a film scene and apply them in the discussion.

Instructions:

Watch: The full opening scene from Inglourious Basterds (19:20)

  • 1st paragraph – What are THREE formal elements of film that made a significant impact on this scene. Consider cinematography (camera angles, framing, movement, focus), mise-en-scene, lighting, audio and sound effects, editing (cuts, transitions), and, of course, acting and storytelling. Provide specific examples as to where exactly you see these film elements being used.
  • 2nd paragraph – What is the overall mood and message of this opening scene? In terms of storytelling, how does this scene set the tone for the rest of the film to follow? What do you like/dislike about this scene? Explain with specific examples.

Use specific examples in your response. Be sure to define, in your own words, any specific key terminology.
