You have two options for this essay. This is the mid-term for the course.

Option #1. Examine one of the films listed under Module #3 on the M3 Gender Performances Movie Selections page and write a short (1000 words) essay focused on the following question: Can you identify and describe gender bias in the performance? You may use the Bechdel test or any other indicator. Select a film and describe how the actors perform as masculine, feminine or neutral gender. You might examine elements such as the portrayal of women, the number of characters who are male or female, how their relationships are shown, or the number of scenes with sex or violence. Consider whether the film passes the Bechdel Test.

Option #2. Examine one of the films listed in the LGBTQ database on Kanopy in the USF Library (link on M3 movie page) or one of the films listed on the M3 Gender Performances Movie Selections page and write a short (1000 words) essay focused on the following question: How does the actor’s performance challenge essentialist ideas of fixed gender identities, heteronormativity and sexual orientation? Select a film and describe how the actors perform gender within (or beyond) the diverse LGBTQ spectrum. You might examine elements such as identity and difference; community, political engagement and social change. Consider whether the film turns away from negative stereotypes. Definition of Stereotype (Links to an external site.) Please avoid extensively summarizing the plot at the expense of analyzing the actor’s performance.

You must put the word count and the option you selected on your essay under your name in the top left corner of the first page. There is no need for a cover page.

Please remember the peer review policy and wait for your peers to be assigned. Your peers will be assigned no later than 9 am after the deadline, then I will run the tool to assign peers randomly during the two-day grace period. Therefore, there will be no peer assignments upon request. There will be no peers assigned after 5 pm on the day of the expiration of the grace period. You must keep checking if you submit late in order to find your peers. You will have the two-day grace period to complete your peer reviews.
