1. Information to include in your entries: For each entry, please include as much of the following information as you can. • Genus and species name • Indicate whether it is a bacterium, an archaeon, or a eukaryote • Cell morphology (shape, size, arrangement) • Cell wall type (“gram” wall type if a bacterium, cell wall type if an archaeon or eukaryote. NOTE: although you can do a gram stain on an archaeon or eukaryote and get a color, the results are not informative because the walls of those organisms are different. You must describe the type of cell wall for archaea and eukarya. Just giving the gram reaction is not satisfactory) • Is it motile? If so, how (flagella? gliding motility?) • Description of metabolism. Is it respiratory or fermentative? What is its energy source? If fermentative, what is the product of its fermentation and what pathway does it use? If it is a respirer, what is its electron acceptor? If this organism can grow both aerobically or anaerobically, explain 1) what its energy sources are under each condition and 2) when growing anaerobically, the type of anaerobiosis it uses (fermentation? respiration? If fermentation, of what and what are the end products? If respiration, what’s the terminal electron acceptor?) Does it have any other unique metabolic properties (e.g., fixation of nitrogen gas)? • Description of where the microorganism can be found (e.g. fresh or salt water, alkaline or acidic soils, the Dead Sea, etc.). In other words, if you wanted to isolate it from the environment, what sample would you get? • Description of the importance of the microorganism to humans, animals, and/or ecosystems, etc. 2. No 3-ring binders. No Exceptions. 3-ring binders are a pain for me to manage when I collect them. You may use a spiral notebook, or you may collect your entries into a folder so long as the pages are bound to/within the folder. 3. Your Library should be organized by category, and both entries of a particular category should appear sequentially. 4. The first page(s) should be a table of contents. Organize your entries and table of contents similar to this: i. Category 1 title Pages 1. A 3-7 2. B 8-12 ii. Category 2 title 1. A 13-17 2. B 18-22 5. You may type or write by hand. 6. Feel free to include pictures and drawings. 7. A bibliography must be included at the end of each entry (or category) to show the sources you used for your information. 8. Cite within the text as well to show where you got your information. instructions and example attached
