Requirements: Locate a newspaper article in Miami Herald, TheLos Angeles Times, The New York Times or other major newspaper or news magazine (e.g., Time, Newsweek) that discusses some criminal justice policy or issue. Drawing on the ideas, theories, and concepts presented in class, offer an analysis of the criminal justice policy or issue.
You can focus on any type of criminal justice policy or issue you like. There are three keys to success on this assignment: 1) convey a good understanding of the issue being reported on in the press, 2) reveal a specific and good understanding of select course material (i.e., lectures and readings) that relates to the issue being reported on, and 3) demonstrate how the course material can be applied to the issue/example being reported on in the press. With regard to #3 in particular, the goal is to show connections between what you are learning in class and an important issue in the world.
Ideally, along the way, you will reveal that you are thinking more critically, theoretically, and/or empirically about these issues, and reflecting on course material in ways that go above and beyond how it has been presented in readings and lectures.
FORMAT: The paper should be approximately 1-2 pages in length and must be formatted according to the following specifications: double spaced, typed, 12-point font, with 1 inch margins; number your pages. Also, include a copy of the news article with your paper (see below). Note: do not assume the grader will read the article, thus it is imperative to summarize it in your paper
