  3. Thesis: State your position on the article you are responding to.

 

Body Paragraph 1:

  1. Topic Sentence: State the reason for your position on the article you are responding to.
  2. Support: Back up your reason with relevant examples and convincing but logical explanations. Explain why your position matters and why people should care. This will help justify and validate your position. Cite any information you use.
  3. Concluding Sentence: Summarize your reason for your position on the article.

 

Body Paragraph 2:

  1. Topic Sentence: Based on your position on the article, state what you would like to see happen. This might be a call-to-action, a recommendation, or food-for-thought. Remember that readers read the letters to the editor, so it’s not just the editor who will see this!
  2. Support: Back up what you would like to see happen with relevant examples and convincing but logical explanations. Explain why you want people to change the way they feel, think, or act, as well as how they can do so. This will help justify and validate your position. Cite any information you use.
  3. Concluding Sentence: Summarize what you would like to see happen based on your position on the article.

 

Conclusion Paragraph:

  1. Recap: Use fresh language to restate your thesis and the main points you covered in your letter.
  2. Reiterate: Reiterate your call-to-action, recommendation, or food-for-thought to emphasize what you would like to see happen.
